The traditions of the Institute of Physical Education are based on the powerful foundation of Buryat athletes' performances at major competitions not only in Europe and the world, but also at the Olympic Games. Many heads of departments, heads of divisions, and teachers are graduates of the Faculty of Physical Education. S. V. Kalmykov went from being a teacher to a professor, doctor of science, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Education, and rector of the Buryat State University within the walls of the Physical Education, Sports and Tourism Institute. G. Ya. Galimov, V. A. Strelnikov, A. V. Gaskov, A. E. Pavlov, etc. became doctors of pedagogical sciences and professors. The Institute has an educational and sports base, which includes a gymnastics hall, 2 halls for sports games, 2 wrestling halls, a boxing hall, a stadium with a football field, a bow-drome, an archery hall, and the Olimp sports and recreation camp on Lake Shchuchye.

A number of scientific directions have been formed at the Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism: on the study of ethnocultural and ethnopsychological features of training highly qualified athletes in the context of "East-West", headed by Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Education, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor S.V. Kalmykov; on the training of highly qualified martial artists, headed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor A.V. Gaskov; on the formation of health-saving technologies, headed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor G.Ya. Galimov. In recent years, the activities of the institute's teachers in the preparation of scientific and scientific-methodical literature have noticeably intensified. More than 30 monographs and 60 textbooks have been published. The Institute regularly holds various scientific and practical conferences on the problems of physical culture and sports, including international ones: "Modern Olympic and Mass Sports in the Context of "East-West", "Modern Problems and Potential of Scientific Research in Physical Culture and Sports". The Department of Tourism and Service is developing theoretical and methodological approaches to the design of tourist and recreational areas of the region, which will allow us to determine the concepts of development of the territory, form points of attraction for tourists, differentiate tourist flows, locations of collective accommodation facilities, objects of tourist display and visit, develop standards of tourist services with specification of the necessary types and kinds of supporting and accompanying infrastructure.
