The department "Russian As a Foreign Language" was founded in September 2002 at the Philology Faculty of Buryat State University.
The RFL department offers training to foreign citizens willing to study at our University and receive higher education or take a postgraduate course for an academic degree. Courses in Russian for overseas students (of different duration), elective courses where international students can learn cross-cultural aspects about history and culture of Russia and Buryatia are also available.
Professors of the RFL department teach Russian as a foreign language to international students from Austria, Belgium, Germany, USA, China, Mongolia, The Republic of Korea, Turkey, Finland, Switzerland, Poland, Japan, India, Tibet, Singapore and other countries.
Center of Russian language testing for foreign citizens was established in March 2003 at the RFL department, Buryat State University.
In this center international students can be tested for a State Certificate of Russian as a foreign language on all proficiency levels, take preparatory courses and pass preliminary (trial) testing. The Center of Russian language testing for foreign citizens gives confirmation of the language proficiency necessary for obtaining Russian Federation citizenship. Testers of the Center are professors of the RFL department who had additional training in the methodology of language testing.
The RFL department uses audiovisual aids in the classroom, has a library and a collection of audio- teaching materials; in 2009 study rooms were renovated and new equipment purchased. Soon a computer classroom for international students will be opened.
The section RKI favors the organization of cultural programs for international students by getting involved the students of university language faculties. The cultural program includes visits of historic and cultural exhibitions, Ulan-Ude tours and rest on Baikal. Such events as The Celebration of Russian Language, The Russian Language competition, The Contest of composing, The Pushkin's celebration (in honor of Pushkin), Days of Cyrillic writing are annually organized for international students.
Since 2006 the course of advanced studies "The teaching methodology of Russian as a foreign language" has been organized. Russian and foreign professors of Russian language, senior students and graduating students of language faculties of The Buryat State University and others educational institutions of Ulan-Ude go through the course.

Tungusova, Head of the Department of Russian language and teaching methods of Irkutsk State University, EdD, has been a visiting lecturer at the RFL department.
Professors of the RFL department received training in teaching methods of Russian as a foreign language at leading Russian universities: Moscow State University, Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (Moscow), Pushkin State Russian Language Institute (Moscow), Saint-Petersburg State University. Many have an experience of teaching Russian abroad - in Mongolia, China, Afghanistan, Vietnam.
Research work in various aspects of teaching Russian as a foreign language is an important part of the RFL department's activity (Scientific supervisor - Cand. Phil., Assistant Professor, L. Ts. Tarchimaeva), teaching manuals and learner materials are constantly developed by our professors and lecturers. Our Professors take part in scientific conferences in Russia and abroad (Mongolia, Poland, Bulgaria, China), in events organized by the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (MAPRYAL). In 2009 the RFL department under the aegis of The Language and Literature Department of The Buryat State University organized The Festival of Russian Language in China in the framework of The Year of Russian Language in China (Changchun, Xian). In December 2006 the RFL department in co-operation with The Pushkin State Russian Language Institute (Moscow) arranged Regional Research and Practice Seminar "Modern Humanitarian problems". A postgraduate course in "Theory and methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language" (discipline code 13.00.02) was opened in 2005 for the purpose of academic and methodological advancement of the teaching staff.
The RFL department cooperates with Moscow State University (MGU), Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, and Saint-Petersburg State University (SPbGU), Novosibirsk State Technical University (NGTU), Novosibirsk State Training University (NGPU), Irkutsk State University (IGU), Irkutsk State Linguistic University (IGLU), Irkutsk State Technical University. Cooperation agreement were concluded with Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, with Mongolian State University of Education (Ulan-Bator), Mongolian State University, Xian Foreign language University (China), Changchun Polytechnic University (China), Laval University (Quebec, Canada), Higher Military Academy (Mongolia), Confucius Institute.
