Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science was founded in 2001 on the basis of the Mathematics Faculty (founded in 1996), which used to be the department of Mathematics and Physics Faculty (founded in 1932). At first, there were two departments, one of Mathematics and another of Physics. The first 29 students enrolled in 1932. By now, there are more than 5600 alumni of the Institute with various majors (Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science).
The Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science embraces the School of Mathematics and the School of Computer Science, four departments (Mathematical Analysis and Algebra, Geometry, Applied Mathematics, Information Technologies) and the Research and Education Innovative Center for Systems Research and Automation. In 2002, a new reading hall was opened for the students of IMCS. It contains a wide range of course books and academic literature in Mathematics and Computer Science.
